I just noticed Joomla 1.5.4 was released earlier this month

Joomla! 1.5.4 [Naiki] is a normal maintenance release which includes a few low to moderate security issues, many bug fixes, and several very nice improvements. It has been a little over ten weeks since Joomla! 1.5.3 was released on April 24, 2008. The Development Working Group's goal is to continue to provide regular, frequent updates to the Joomla! community containing the latest bug fixes and minor enhancements.

So far I have really enjoyed working with Joomla version 1.5.x.  I've been integrating that with the Virtuemart shopping cart.  I think the guys at Virtuemart are doing a fantastic job, however there are many code tweaks that need to be made before you are able to realistically send any customers to your store.  Most of them are pretty small, but hopefully they will be fixed in near-future Virtuemart releases.  They seem so basic an obvious to me....

Affiliate Marketing Tactics: Making Money from Home

by Zack Lim

Nobody complains that too much money will bring harm to them. Would you like to make a little bit of extra money at home? What if I told you that you could make money online and it will almost not cost you anything to make it? You will be shock that these sorts of things are going on every day on the Internet.

There are a lot of different scams that are out there but I’m not talking about those, I’m talking about starting a business on the Internet knowing affiliate marketing. This is a business that can easily be done from home in the evenings and on weekends and you can build it as fast as you want. The more effort you put into an affiliate marketing business, the more reward you will get in return.

Understanding affiliate marketing is actually quite a simple thing. Normally, choosing which affiliate programs you’re going to do have a common pitfall that many people stumble on. Inside any affiliate network, there are going to be a lot amount of loser and number of winners. People normally go towards the winners because they are the ones that give out the huge commissions and then offer the flashiest programs. But far too many people put all of their efforts into making money using these programs and they never make any at all. Many of them just give up because they are frustrated, thinking that affiliate marketing just does not work.

You need to make sure that you are promoting the proper programs if you’re going to take the time to learn about affiliate marketing and how to make money on the Internet. Stay away from the ones that are full of competition because it is too difficult to make any commissions at all. Look through the network that you belong to and find programs that offer things that are a bit out of the ordinary. These are found on the bottom of the affiliate marketing network because they have the least people that are selling their products. Although this looks bad, it is actually an excellent sign that there is some money to be made.

You will be working in areas that are not full of competition by choosing these lesser-known programs. The sales will come much easier and you can also make more money. Choose carefully and you can reach your business goals in a short period of time.

Hope you enjoyed the article,

My favorite day…

There's something about Thursdays. I tend to be very productive.. more than any other day on a thursday. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I know the week is almost over, tomorrow being Friday and all.

Today, so far i've managed to get quite a bit done. I finished a pretty large time consuming marketing campaign this morning, managed to keep up on all incoming mail. I've sent out 8 estimates so far today. Had a meeting with my programmer and all before 10:30.  And now i'm going to take a little break, grab some soda and a snack and then sit down and wrap up a site (well.. hopefully).

Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with someone about our economy. It being what it is, this person was surprised I was managing to not only stay in business but actually be fairly busy with incoming potential work. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised we haven't felt the crunch too. But never look a gift horse in the mouth right? We HAVE slowed down a bit, but it's been by choice. We are about 2 maybe 3 months out from releasing a new piece of software that has the potential to change the way our industry runs. It's exciting, and frustrating (as we just want it to be done). I feel as if we're in the middle of the eye of a great storm. Even if the idea itself doesn't make a cent, I look forward to helping shape the industry and make it safer for new designers. I look forward to making a difference.

Well, i better get back to work, but i just wanted to drop in and say a quick hi and hello to everyone.

What to outsource web designing & development

There are billion of web pages on internet today but still web site designing and development business is booming as thousand of new sites are coming every day besides updating in old sites. Particularly in developed countries like USA, Canada and Uk, businesses are well aware about the importance of internet and they are relying on web site designing and development companies to give them edge over their competitors on internet. As the business of web site designing and development is growing more companies are coming in to offer web site designing and development services. It is now becoming hard for web site designing and development companies to get edge over their competitors. There is only one way for doing so and this is to reduce their price for web site designing and development services and also reduce their turn around time and keeping the quality high.

This could be achieved only by outsourcing web site designing and development services to under developed countries where cost for human resource and that of infra structure is very low as compared to developed countries.

Also due to time difference turn around time is lower than that of developed countries.

Through outsourcing offshore companies have eliminated their in house development cost. They are no more involved in any human resource management headache. No capital cost for development equipment or infrastructure. Off shore companies are only concentrating on marketing and rest is taken care by their outsourcing partners.

Due to internet, communication is no more a problem and they work like they are sitting in same office but in different rooms.

Language is also not an issue because English is essential language in countries and also they have same skill sets as in other developed countries

Does Your Blog Suck?

Here's an educational rant at Search Engine Land that provides a little food for thought. Are you guilty?

To me, this line sums up the real point: "The problem with this, of course, is that any time you do anything just for SEO purposes, you'll almost always do it wrong."

SEO is powerful, but providing valuable content and resources is much more powerful. Don't let the allure of SEO suck you in to the point you suck.

The Tree of Cult Kidz TV

I had to think of a name for the site I was doing. I've taken another template and decided to remix it into something else. A small directory of nostalgic kids programmes from when I was younger (or even beyond that with some of them!) I've uploaded the site although it's technically not finished... I have to fill out a page on the Creative Commons Attributes Licence that basically allows me to use the template and to tell people where I got it from.

It started life out out as Organic Landscape Design website called Landscaping Victoria, but it's totally changed subject matter and been made into a website about children's programmes. It was one of those things that interested me at the time and I needed a topic to focus upon. With making it a directory of kids programmes I can focus on any genre of shows I fancy so if I get bored with one then I can easily find another to work on.  And the great thing is that I can keep adding to the site. I found a company that offers free webspace, the only catch is you get a little horizontal banner at the top of the page and the words '100webspace.net' at the end of your domain name. They are probably one of the better hosts I've found considering how much you are getting free. It's less advertisements than geocities have and they only allow you 15mb.

Here are some screenshots of my website:

Hiring Right Web Designers Is The Key For A Successful Business Website

I realise that you might not believe that right now but think about it for a minute. When was the last time you dismissed a company out of hand because of its website. Not to mention the companies you didn’t find at all on Google that missed out on a chance of your business.

The Web Designer is the “Key” to a successful business website. But here’s the problem ….

Hire the wrong person and your website will be a flop. Hire someone who does not understand marketing principles and your website will not appeal to your visitors. Hire someone with no experience of online marketing and no-one will visit your site and your investment will have been wasted.

Lets take a look at some of the mistake business owners make hiring web designers.

Mistake 1. Assuming That Big Is Better

Many Business Owners assume that larger web design companies and agencies are going to provide a better service than smaller company. The main benefit of a smaller company is the personal service you should be able to get.

With larger design companies your dealings are often with a salesman who “hands over” the business to the designer and then loses interest in your business.
Whatever the size of the business you choose, you need to be offered a personal service with a main contact who is interested in your business.

Mistake 2 Assuming All Web Designers Are Equal

Did you know there are different types of web designer based on their background and experience? Each has their pros and cons – you need to be aware of the differences.
Firstly, the print designer who also creates web designs. Print Designers are used to laying out words and pictures and getting them to work well together. The downside is that a web page is not the same as a fixed piece of paper and the ability to control the design is not as good as in print.

Next, the programmer who creates web designs. Programmers have a unique way of thinking. They are interest in logic and how to do clever things on a website. They are able to create websites that interact well with customers and provide a lot of interesting features. However programmers typically have not learnt about laying out designs correctly or essentials like which colours go well together or which colours appeal to different target audiences.

These are the main types but there are other who have their own problems.

All of these Web Designer types are often missing a vital piece of training. They have no knowledge of marketing a business online beyond creating a website. They may not understand the consequence of their design on getting visitors to your site to take the actions you require of them. So you might end up with a website that looks great but has no visitors or those that visit the site leave very quickly.
These are just the first two mistakes from the 7 biggest mistakes that business owners make hiring a website designer. For more detail and the other five mistakes to avoid visit www.websitesinbusiness.co.uk

A louder web presence

Over the last couple of weeks, Vasanth, Vikram and I have been working on the new design of the institute's web site. Vasanth did an excellent job on the design and gave us four color schemes to choose from. I post, prematurely, two screenshots here that are an excellent approximation to what the final site might look like.

A screenshot of the home page of IIT Madras
A screenshot of one of the inner pages

All credits for the design go to Vasanth Kumar (Infy).

I welcome suggestions to add, remove and change any features in the website. You can see the revamped first level menu structure in the screenshot of the home page. At present, most of the second level menus will be retained.

Note that this design must first be approved by the Dean Students and hopefully, he will nod his approval by the end of this month. If that happens, you can hope to see this site functional in a month from then. So, all of us from the Institute Web Operations team have our fingers crossed.
